This holiday of a lifetime explorers the chilly water of the South Greenland. Experience spectacular arctic landscapes along with a unique and interesting wildlife and the fascinating history of the Vikings from the safety and comfort of the specially equipped expedition vessel s/v Rembrandt van Rijn.

This arctic expedition starts in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik where we board a short flight to Narsarsuaq in Greenland. Boarding the s/v Rembrandt van Rijn we cruise through the fjords and ice-bergs first stopping at Eqaluit qeqertat and an old Thule settlement and then on to the beautiful glaciers at Qaleralik Sermia. Continuing south we will try to stop at Uunartoq, where we can bathe in a large hot spring surrounded by icebergs. Next we trace the Viking history from Herjolfsnes, where they first landed in Greenland to the famous Norse Medieval Cathedral at Hvalsey to the home of Erik the Red at Brattahlíð. Finally we arrive back at Narsarssuaq for our flight back to Iceland.

DAY 1 Arrive in Reykjavik, transfer to hotel

Today we meet you at Reykjavik airport and transfer you to your hotel in Reykjavik, the rest of the day is free for you to take a look around Iceland’s capital city.

DAY 2 Fly to Narsarsuaq, board expedition vessel

Today we transfer you to Keflavik for your flight to Greenland. We arrive at Narsarsuaq and board the ship.

DAY 3 Sail to Eqaluit qeqertat an old Thule settlement

In Nordre Sermilik (Isafjord) we are surrounded by mountains of over 1000m. We make a landing on Eqaluit qeqertat and an old Thule settlement, and push as far as the ice-bergs will allow us, to the glacier front of Eqalorutsit Kangidlit Sermiat. Other landings will be possible.

DAY 4 Sail to the glacier fronts of Qaleralik Sermia

Today in Bredefjord at Qoornooq, we land in an area with beautiful remains of houses from the Thule culture. Later we sail to the beautiful glacier fronts of Qaleralik Sermia, where we will have some zodiac excursions and make some landings near the glacier. It is a good area for White-tailed Eagles.

DAY 5 Sail to Uunartoq, hot springs

We reach Lichtenau a lovely but nearly deserted Greenlandic village, where the Herrnhuters had a mission in the 18th Century, and where some of their large buildings still remain. We will try to get to Uunartoq, where we can bathe in a large hot spring surrounded by icebergs. Across at Vagar we find the remains of a Viking homestead.

DAY 6 Visit where vikings first arrived in Greenland

Herjolfsnes (Ikigait) was the first landfall site for the Vikings when they arrived from Iceland in Greenland. Across is the small settlement of Fredriksdal, where the Moravians had an important mission post.

DAY 7 Visit famous medieval Norse Cathedral

At Hvalsey we visit the famous medieval Norse Cathedral, the largest Norse building in Greenland.

DAY 8 Visit Brattahlia where Erik the Red lived

In Eriksfjord we visit the Viking sites of Gardar (a walk of 3km from the landing site at Itilleq in the neck of the Peninsula) and Brattahlíð, where Erik the Red lived about a thousand years ago. In the evening we arrive at the port of Narsarssuaq.

DAY 9 Narsarsuaq, disembark the ship

Our final morning. We will disembark the ship in the morning in Narsarsuaq and fly by scheduled plane to Keflavik in Iceland.
