Location

Athens, Milos & Santorini

This Greece photography workshop tour followed the hugely popular Italy & Thailand tours escorted by Me Ra Koh (the 'Photo Mom'), and her husband, Brian Tausend (award winning photographer and cinematographer). This Greek photography tour will discover the ancient history of Athens and explore its most picturesque neighbourhoods before heading to the beautiful Greek volcanic islands of Milos and Santoroni. The colours of the buildings, rock formations, beaches, blue sea and clear skies on these islands in spring make for fantastic images, while the friendly people, great food and relaxed atmosphere make this an ideal setting for you to develop your photography skills. Me Ra and Brian will empower you to capture your journey through professional hands-on teaching, and ensure the trip is more fun, inspiring and entertaining than you can imagine. Accommodation is in boutique style hotels and friendly family run guesthouses. Most of your meals are included, including some special food & wine tastings. All levels of photography are welcome.

Note: These workshop tours tend to fill up early so we recommend booking well in advance.

After finding a taverna for a leisurely lunch, we explore one of the most important and famous ancient sites in the world, the Acropolis, which sits on top of a rocky hill overlooking the city, providing great views. The afternoon light is ideal to photograph the numerous temples and ancient sites here. You’ll see the temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch, which formed a symbolic entrance to the city. You’ll also tour the Temple of Nike, the most famous of Greek relics, the Parthenon, and see the original home of the marble sculptures removed by Lord Elgin that are now held in the British Museum in London. Subject to time, while at the Acropolis you could also visit the impressive museum, the towering entrance of Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of the Athene Nike.

DAY 3: Fly to Milos and tour the island

We check out early this morning and head to the airport to fly to Milos where we stay in a friendly family hotel in the main village of Adamas. We are here in Milos at the very start of the season which is a great time to visit. Spring flowers should still be in bloom, the weather will be warm and sunny, but the island will still be quiet and free from the large numbers of tourists who visit from June to August. We’ll spend the day exploring the island’s beautiful scenery and discovering why its called the ‘Island of Colours’. We’ll drive through the beautiful hilly interior and visit Pollonia town and beach, the amazing moon-like landscape at Sarakiniko, the small port of Mandrakia and Firopotamos village. Finally we’ll hope for a spectacular sunset from Klima fishing village. In the evening we’ll enjoy a traditional Greek meal in a local restaurant.
OVERNIGHT:

DAY 4: Milos exploration

We have the whole day to explore Milos today with our local guide and to concentrate on capturing some of the colourful scenery and rock formations created by the volcanic history of the island. First we’ll visit the abandoned sulphur mines which feel like a ghost town, before visiting the famous beaches at Paliochori and Firiplaka. There will be time for a swim and sunbathe, though the waters won’t will still be fairly cool at this time of year. Finally we’ll ascend to the Kastro at sunset for an amazing and iconic view out across the sea with the church in the foreground. We’ll work on techniques and strategies for making the most of sunsets and obtaining high contrast images in fading light.
OVERNIGHT:
Milos Hotel
MEALS:
Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 5: Milos to Santorini

We leave Milos and our new local friends reluctantly this morning and take the ferry to the volcanic island of Santorini. On arrival we get our first view of the huge underwater caldera and surrounding cliffs that were created by a huge volcanic eruption in the 16th century. The two main towns of the island, Fira and Oia cling to these cliffs with their whitewashed, cubist style houses overlooking the bay and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles. It’s a spectacular setting and our hotel is located minutes from the centre of Fira which is a vibrant and exciting town to base ourselves for the next few days. After leaving the airport we have time to check in to our hotel before we head out for a late lunch and for a first taste of our surroundings, some afternoon photography of the houses and streets around us, before a great meal in the evening.
OVERNIGHT:
Santorini hotel
MEALS:
Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 6: Santorini wine tasting, cooking course & village exploration

Today we treat you with a fun & informative wine and food tour in Santorini, followed by a culinary feast filled with Santorini flavors and traditional Greek delights. The day starts with a visit to a charming vineyard learning about the unique viticulture that makes Santorini’s vine-growing respected worldwide for its distinctive means of production. During the tour, we’ll visit 2 traditional Santorini wineries and taste the island’s signature wines such as Assyrtiko, Nykteri and Vinsanto. Then we’ll help a local chef prepare a feast of three Santorini signature dishes at a traditional restaurant before enjoying the fruits of our labours at the end of the cooking lesson. During the morning we’ll concentrate on close up and still life photography, with the concept of selecting and composing images to go with a magazine article on the island’s food and wine.
Late in the afternoon we head to Oia village, the quintessential Greek village that’s known for its sugar cube houses and pretty, blue-domed churches. The village is renowned as the place on the island to see the sun set, with its streets stacked into the side of the cliffs overlooking the spectacular caldera. We’ll follow our guide up to the old ruins of an ancient Venetian castle, known as the Kastro of Oia, and gaze down from the village and caldera to the sea.
Note – there are a lot of steps and steep walks up and down through the villages involved on this tour so you need to be relatively fit and mobile to make the best of your time here.
OVERNIGHT:
Santorini hotel
MEALS:

DAY 7: Santorini boat trip & Red Beach

We take to the water this morning for a boat trip in the Caldara (approx. 5 hours). This will give us a different perspective to the villages on the surrounding cliffs, as well as take us past the Venetian Lighthouse and to several beautiful private bays for swimming and snorkelling. We’ll also visit the hot springs and enjoy a delicious barbecue lunch in a secluded bay. Finally we return past Aspronisi and the Vocanic Islands to Vlihada Marina.
In the afternoon we visit Santorini’s famous Red Beach. The red cliffs, sand and sea here make for some beautiful images, as well as giving us some downtime to relax. If time allows we can also visit the Minoan settlement of Akrotiri, now one of Santorini’s most important archaelogical sites. A huge eruption destroyed the town, and much of the surrounding area around 1600 BC. Nowadays, the picturesque streets, the two-story buildings, the lovely frescoes and plenty of tools witness the way of life in the prehistoric times. Some splendid houses are dotted around the village as well as a traditional windmill. Akrotiri has plenty of churches to visit and one of the most beautiful is the church of Agios Nikolaos built right above the impressive red rocks, on the way to the Red Beach.
