Trek to Everest Base Camp

Trek to Everest Base Camp

This is a world-class trek that takes you into the soaring, snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas as well as allowing time to explore the crowded narrow lanes, medieval temples and traditional architecture of Kathmandu. Justifiably famous for being both challenging and rewarding, a trek to Everest Base Camp is an unforgettable achievement for those who have the stamina and determination to make it.

We have partnered with Global Promise to offer a charity fund raising departure on this trek in October 2011. A minimum fundraising commitment of £975 (+ international flights, which we're happy to arrange) is required to cover the subsidised ground costs and support to the selected beneficiary charities - Help for Heroes and Marie Curie.

After exploring the fascinating sprawling city of Kathmandu, we take a short but spectacular flight to the mountain airfield at Lukla from where the trek begins.
For the next few days we follow the course of the Dudh Kosi River gradually climbing through forested valleys of birch, fir and rhododendron.
Rest days are included at the delightful Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar and the beautiful village of Dingboche, to allow you to acclimatise to the gains in altitude and admire the spectacular Himalayan peaks. As we continue along the Khumbu valley, the unfolding mountain views are quite simply breathtaking with the panorama of Everest, Nuptse and Ama Dablam appearing before us.
The landscape changes as the route climbs higher and you’ll soon be walking on glacial moraine and by frozen rivers in an icy landscape. Finally we reach our goal, Everest Base Camp where we spend time to enjoy the surroundings and the sense of achievement of completing your trek to the base of the world’s highest mountain. The final highlight is the short but steep ascent of Kala Pattar, which offers one of the most spectacular views in the world and is the perfect place to take in the full majesty of Mount Everest up close and personal.
From here we retrace our steps down the trail via Namche Bazaar to Lukla before returning to Kathmandu.

Accommodation

We use a comfortable hotel in Kathmandu at the start and end of the tour. This is usually the Shanker Hotel, formerly a royal palace and full of character within walking distance of Thamel. For the trek, we will use a variety of lodges and teahouses. In recent years many new lodges have opened offering quite good facilities and amenities. However, in some areas the lodges can be run on a very simple basis where toilets and washing facilities are outside the building. We can't promise that you will always have full amenities all the time, so you should be aware of this before embarking on the trek.
